“The Citadel - Bond Hall”
The Citadel was originally located in downtown Charleston. In 1922 the campus was moved to the present site. Known as The Greater Citadel campus, the East Wing of Bond Hall is one of the original structures and is the last surviving building to date from the original opening date of 1922.
The Citadel decided to renovate Bond Hall in the late 1980’s.
The Problem
In 1989 the renovation process was delayed and modified by Hurricane Hugo which heavily damaged the entire structure. The scope of the renovation included changes in the center portion, and the east and rear wings of Bond Hall. To accommodate the new program requirements the building underwent significant structural changes that included:
- Removal of the floor and roof framing systems,
- Reconfiguration of interior bearing and non bearing walls. Walls were opened to allow installation of large storefront systems.
The Challenge
The structural challenges that needed to be overcome included:
- Exterior wall remediation and stabilization,
- Formosan termite infestation,
- Revised load path to grade for modified and upgraded loads,
- Revised foundation designs and configurations,
- Introduction of large opening in existing load bearing wall.
The Solution
With an understanding of the conditions of the building, its historic importance, and budget limitations; a choice of materials and construction methodologies was selected. The results included a successful implementation of the architectural design requirements and an overall improvement in both structural capacity and stability of Bond Hall. The building has been in operation for more than a decade and continues to perform as designed as a low maintenance structure.
