“Edisto Interpretive Center

Located in the ACE Basin in South Carolina, the Department of Natural Resources‘ web site describes the Edisto Interpretive Center as “a 7,000 square-foot facility consisting of staff offices, interpretive exhibit galleries, a classroom and conference area.” (Click here to view )  The center also has a dock, a nature-trail system, and public boat access to adjacent waterways”.

The Problem
The building’s site is a Carolina lowcountry coastal forest adjoining a salt water creek. The structure had to be “set into” the natural environment. The building was to include as many natural and locally occurring construction elements as possible. The project was a LEED programmed design that was faced with meeting conservative budgetary limits and the need for a low maintenance structure.

The Challenge
  • Site the project in a coastal forest with minimal impact to adjoining environment,
  • Select systems that were LEED compatible and still cost effective,
  • Work with the Architects to include structural elements as exposed architectural features.
The Solution

The project site layout included input from the Contractor, A/E professional, and DNR. All parties walked the site to layout driveways, parking areas, and building pad locations. Walkways through the forests were laid out to reach the landing and dock areas. Before final locations were noted for each element, the trees and other natural barriers were carefully considered. The Architect’s design incorporated materials that are sympathetic to the environment. The designs integrated both light and heavy wood framed construction. Wood poles, wood framing, decks, and trusses were exposed in many areas. The building design needed to include considerations regarding the proximity of the treated wood poles to the occupied spaces. As a result of the unique A/E design concepts and components, and through the thoughtful selection of building materials, the Architect applied for and was able to receive LEED Certification on the Edisto Interpretive Center.
